9. Russia formally recognises Taliban-led Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan

  • Russia officially recognised the Taliban-led Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, the first formal recognition since the 2021 takeover.
  • As of July 2025, Russia is the only country to recognise the Taliban as Afghanistan's de jure government.
  • The United Nations has said recognition is not possible while curbs on women's education and employment continue.
  • The Taliban government has informal ties with China, Pakistan and Qatar, but these are not formal recognition.
