2. Universal Basic Income: The Case for UBI in India

  • The argument: UBI is needed because of wealth inequality, automation and climate displacement; India's top 1% hold 40% of wealth.
  • A minimal UBI of ₹7,620 per person a year would cost about 5% of GDP.
  • The 2011-13 SEWA pilot in Madhya Pradesh showed gains in nutrition, schooling and earnings.
  • A phased start with vulnerable groups is proposed, without replacing PDS or MGNREGA early on.

6. SEBI Working Group on Short Selling and SLB Review

  • SEBI will set up a working group for a comprehensive review of short selling and the SLB framework.
  • Short selling was introduced in 2007 and SLB in 2008; both have changed little since.
  • Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey announced it at the CNBC-TV18 Global Leadership Summit.
  • In SLB a clearing corporation guarantees settlement between lender and borrower.
