Madanapalle Zero Waste Model Under SBM-Urban 2.0
Why in the news
Madanapalle is cited as an example of scientific urban waste handling under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0.
How the model works
| Element | Practice |
|---|---|
| Segregation at source | Biodegradable, non-biodegradable and upcycling streams, as the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 require |
| Local processing | Wet waste to compost and vermicompost; dry waste to Material Recovery Facilities; lowers transport costs and emissions |
| Resource recovery | Non-recyclable waste made into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) for cement plants; RRR Centres promote Reduce, Reuse, Recycle |
| Legacy waste | Bio-mining clears old dumps and creates green or public spaces |
