Why in the news

Railways missed the December 2025 Kavach target on two major routes; completion is now expected in 2026.

About Kavach

A home-grown Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system built to stop collisions, over-speeding and signal passing at danger (SPAD).

How it works

  • Radio links, trackside equipment and on-board locomotive systems exchange data between trains, signals and track devices.
  • If a collision risk, red-signal breach or overspeed is sensed, brakes engage automatically.
  • Also gives an SOS alert and works in fog, rain and at night.
