Why in the news

The Indian Navy received INS Udaygiri on 1 July 2025. The ship is the second vessel of the Project 17A class of stealth frigates.

  • Project 17A covers seven multi-mission stealth frigates, a follow-on to the Shivalik class.
  • Builder: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai.
  • Designer: the Warship Design Bureau, the Navy’s in-house design arm.
  • Handed over roughly 37 months after launch, credited to an integrated construction approach.
  • Around 4,000 people were directly employed and over 10,000 indirectly, with more than 200 MSMEs involved.

About Project 17A

The programme follows the Shivalik class. The new frigates have a hull about 4.54% larger than the Shivalik ships, a combined diesel engine and gas turbine propulsion set-up, better stealth features and improved weapons.
