2. PM POSHAN Scheme: Coverage, Funding, Norms and Key Facts

  • Run by the Ministry of Education, PM POSHAN serves a hot cooked meal each school day to roughly 11.8 crore pupils.
  • The mid-day meal programme started on 15 August 1995; the Cabinet renamed it PM POSHAN on 29 September 2021.
  • Costs are split 60:40 between Centre and states, and 90:10 in North-Eastern and Himalayan states.
  • Nutrition norms: 450 calories and 12 g protein for primary; 700 calories and 20 g protein for upper primary.
