Why in the news

A new rural jobs law, passed in the Winter Session, took over from MGNREGA with longer guaranteed work, a changed funding split and tighter tech-based monitoring.

Key facts

  • Guarantee: at least 125 days a year; unemployment allowance stays if work is not given within 15 days of demand.
  • Scheme type: Centrally Sponsored Scheme; states bear unemployment allowance and delay compensation.
  • Allocations: Centre notifies state-wise normative allocations each year; extra spending is borne by states, without diluting the right to work.
  • Seasonal pause: up to 60 days in sowing or harvesting; the 125-day entitlement stays intact.
  • Assets: mapped on a National Rural Infrastructure Stack to prevent duplication.
