About P.C. Mahalanobis and the NSS
Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (1893-1972) was a statistician from Kolkata who gave the Mahalanobis Distance concept. He founded the Indian Statistical Institute in 1931 and Sankhya, India’s first statistical journal, in 1933. The National Sample Survey began in 1950 on his recommendations and runs large household surveys and the Annual Survey of Industries under the National Statistical Office.
