SC/ST atrocities: 217 special fast-track courts set up in 15 States/UTs
Why in the news
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said on 1 October 2026 that 217 special fast-track courts are now working in 15 States and Union Territories to try cases under the laws against untouchability and atrocities on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

About the scheme
Under the centrally sponsored scheme for the PCR and PoA Acts, central aid covers SC/ST protection cells and special police stations, exclusive special courts, relief and rehabilitation of atrocity victims, incentives for inter-caste marriages, and public awareness. A National Helpline Against Atrocities (toll-free 1800-202-1989, short code 14566) helps SC and ST members on offences and the relevant sections of the Acts; it started in 2021-22.
