Historical significance
- After enlightenment the Buddha came here in the sixth century BCE, met his first five disciples and gave his first sermon.
- Ancient names: Mrigadava (Deer Park), Rishipattana, Isipatana.
- The sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, set out the Four Noble Truths with the Eightfold Path, and began the Sangha.
- The Lion Capital of the Ashokan Pillar became India’s National Emblem in 1950; the Dharmachakra sits on the national flag.
- Sarnath school masterpiece: a Gupta-period Buddha image in dharmachakra-pravartana mudra.
