Pulse Procurement: 100% Tur, Urad, Masoor Buying Till 2028-29
Why in the news
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said pigeon pea buying was speeding up, to lift output, back farmers and cut imports.
Key facts
- Plan: buy the entire State production of tur, urad and masoor under the Price Support Scheme (PSS) in 2024-25; promise continues to 2028-29 for self-sufficiency.
- Tur approved for: nine States, namely Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.
- MSP buying under way in: five of these States; Karnataka extended it by 30 days.
- Agencies: NAFED and NCCF.
- Progress as of 25 March: 2.46 lakh tonnes of tur bought; 1,71,569 farmers benefited; Uttar Pradesh prices above MSP.
Long-term strategy
- PM-AASHA Yojana extended to 2025-26 for MSP-based buying of pulses and oilseeds.
- Stabilise pulse prices, raise farmer income, lower imports.
