Why in the news

The Cabinet, chaired by the PM, approved Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for Rabi 2025-26 on P&K fertilizers, to keep them available at affordable prices.

About NBS

  • Run by the Department of Fertilizers.
  • Subsidy is a set rate per kg of N, P, K and S, not per product.
  • Began 1 April 2010, replacing the earlier product-based system for non-urea fertilizers.

Aims: fair prices, balanced fertilizer use matching soil and crop needs, and industry efficiency.

Features

  • Companies set MRPs, monitored by government.
  • 28 grades are covered, such as DAP and NPKS.
  • Urea is different: price controlled by law, ₹242 for a 45-kg bag since March 2018.
