Why in the news
Modi’s three-day trip to Sri Lanka, right after the BIMSTEC summit in Bangkok, produced a package of agreements, project launches and the island’s top honour for a foreign leader.

- Dates: 4-6 April 2025; host: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
- Honour: Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushana, set up in 2008 as the highest award for foreign leaders.
- First formal defence cooperation MoU, nearly 40 years after the IPKF phase of 1987-90.
- Trilateral MoU with the UAE to make Trincomalee a regional energy hub, covering a multi-product pipeline and the oil tank farm.
- An HVDC power grid link between the two countries.
