India Slips to 6th Largest Economy in IMF April 2026 WEO
Why in the news
India remains the fastest-growing major economy, yet the IMF’s April 2026 World Economic Outlook placed it sixth in dollar GDP. Experts call it a statistical effect rather than a slowdown.
Key facts
| Country (2025 estimate) | GDP in US$ trillion | Rank |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | 4.44 | 4th |
| UK | 4.00 | 5th |
| India | 3.92 | 6th |
Two causes
- Currency maths: rankings use US dollars. India grew about 9% nominal in rupee terms, but the rupee fell from 84.6 to 88.5 per dollar between 2024 and 2025. The pound held steady, so the UK moved back to 5th.
- Base year revision: in February 2026 the base year changed from 2011-12 to 2022-23. The new method showed earlier estimates were a bit too high, and FY26 nominal GDP was cut from ₹357 trillion to ₹345.5 trillion, helping Japan and the UK stay ahead.
Outlook
- Economists see a temporary, statistical setback, not a structural weakness.
- 2027: India forecast to return to 4th with $4.58 trillion.
- 2028: projected to pass Japan and become the 3rd largest economy.
Exam angle
- Report: IMF World Economic Outlook, April 2026.
- New GDP base year: 2022-23 (earlier 2011-12).
- Rankings are in US dollars, so exchange rates matter.
