Health Insurance Premium Surge: Finance Ministry Presses IRDAI
Why in the news
As health insurance costs climb and governance slips, especially at Stand-Alone Health Insurance (SAHI) companies, the Finance Ministry asked IRDAI to be more vigilant.
| Issue | Government step |
|---|---|
| Premium hikes | Review pricing; stop excessive increases, mainly for senior citizens |
| Governance | Scrutinise board decisions; ensure compliance |
| PE influence | Worry that PE-backed firms price aggressively to lift valuations |
| Leadership | No Chairperson since March 2025; a senior bureaucrat may be appointed |
Other concerns: delayed or denied claims, and many policyholders, notably seniors, dropping out.
