About GST
GST is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services. It has four main components: CGST and SGST on supplies within a state, IGST on inter-state supplies and imports, and a compensation cess on selected items. Collection figures are published at the start of each month for the previous month.
Exam angle
- Remember that IGST was the largest component in February 2025.
- Gross growth (9.1%) is higher than net growth (8.1%) because refunds were larger.
- January 2025 collections were higher at about Rs 1.96 lakh crore, so February was a month-on-month dip.
- Domestic growth outpaced import growth.
