7. RBI Draft Norms: Banks Owning Non-Financial Assets (SNFA)

  • On 5 May 2026 the RBI released draft norms letting banks acquire Specified Non-Financial Assets, mainly pledged immovable property, to settle defaulted loans.
  • Banks may use this only for NPAs after all other recovery routes fail, and must sell the asset within seven years.
  • Assets are revalued at least every two years, booked at the lower of debt or distress sale value, and cannot go back to the borrower.

8. SEBI Plan: Online Bond Platforms and GIFT City Debt

  • SEBI proposed on 5 May 2026 to widen what Online Bond Platform Providers (OBPPs) can sell retail investors.
  • One proposal lets OBPPs offer IFSCA-regulated products at GIFT City, subject to FEMA and LRS limits.
  • The second proposal explicitly lets OBPPs sell Section 54EC bonds from issuers such as PFC, IRFC and REC.
  • 54EC bonds give LTCG tax relief if gains are reinvested within six months of the sale.

10. ECLGS 5.0: ₹2.55 Lakh Crore Credit Guarantee Scheme

  • Union Cabinet approved ECLGS 5.0 on 5 May 2026, the first version triggered by a geopolitical shock rather than a pandemic.
  • Targeted additional credit is ₹2,55,000 crore, including ₹5,000 crore reserved for airlines.
  • Guarantee cover is 100% for MSMEs and 90% for non-MSMEs and airlines, issued by NCGTC.
