Ajay Seth assumed charge as IRDAI Chairman on 1 September 2025.
He was earlier Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA).
IRDAI stands for Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.

2. Universal Health Care in India: PMJAY Gaps and Reform Path

PMJAY (2018) gives ₹5 lakh cover per household yearly and reached 58.8 crore people in 2023–24.
Only 35% of insured hospital patients actually used insurance schemes, according to HCES 2022–23.
Nearly two-thirds of PMJAY funds go to private hospitals; pending dues stand at ₹12,161 crore.
Public health spending is 1.3% of GDP; National Health Policy 2017 targets 2.5%.

RBI announced withdrawal of ₹2000 notes on 19 May 2023; almost all were back by 31 August 2025.

CAD was $2.4 billion (0.2% of GDP) in Q1FY26 versus $8.6 billion (0.9%) a year earlier.
Q4FY25 saw a surplus of $13.5 billion (1.3% of GDP).

6. External Commercial Borrowings: Tracks, Limits and Rules

ECBs are foreign loans raised by Indian companies, governed by RBI under FEMA, 1999.
RBI's framework has three tracks: medium-term foreign currency, long-term foreign currency and rupee-denominated.
The general limit is USD 750 million a financial year; ECB-2 return is filed monthly.

8. Global Governance Initiative: Xi Unveils GGI at SCO Plus Meeting

Xi Jinping introduced the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) at the SCO Plus meeting in Tianjin, China.
The GGI stresses sovereign equality, international law, multilateralism and people-centred policies.
Twenty heads of state and leaders of international organisations attended, the largest SCO gathering so far.
The Tianjin Declaration, adopted at the summit, focuses on economic and security cooperation.
China also announced a five-year medical aid plan: 500 heart patients, 5,000 cataract operations and 10,000 cancer screenings.

PRATUSH is a radiometer built to explore the Cosmic Dawn, when the first stars and galaxies formed.
It runs on a single-board computer roughly the size of a credit card.
It is meant to work from the Moon's far side, a radio-quiet environment.
It targets the faint 21-cm hydrogen line; lab tests showed noise down to a few millikelvins.
