About the Indian Air Force
The service began under British command as a small auxiliary force. In 1945 King George VI granted it the Royal prefix in recognition of its wartime service. When India became a republic on 26 January 1950, the prefix was dropped and the force took the name Indian Air Force. Its motto, taken from the Bhagavad Gita, is “Touch the Sky with Glory”.
