NUCFDC Seeks SRO Status for Urban Cooperative Banks
Why in the news
The umbrella body for urban cooperative banks said it would approach the RBI for recognition as a Self-Regulatory Organisation soon, as its capital base was almost at the required level.
About NUCFDC
- National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation Ltd, licensed as a mid-layer NBFC in February 2024.
- Equity: 20% NCDC and 80% participating UCBs.
- Role: umbrella organisation for UCBs, promoting stability, digital change and sector-wide standards.
Key facts
- Paid-up capital set to exceed ₹300 crore; UCB inflows expected by 17 November 2025 and share allotments from mid-December.
- SRO status would make it a regulatory and oversight body for UCBs, supporting RBI supervision.
- Members: 440 of 1,462 UCBs, holding 70% of the sector’s ₹5.5 trillion deposits.
- Planned fund-based services: short-term liquidity support, Tier-II capital support, refinance and technology infrastructure loans; capital can be leveraged up to seven times.
- Smaller UCBs (net worth below ₹50 crore) may get digital banking through NUCFDC’s secure infrastructure, subject to RBI approval.
