Meghalaya opened a soil lake at Williamnagar in East Garo Hills on 13 December 2025 as part of a push for water conservation and sustainable development.

About Meghalaya’s water efforts
The state has about 70,000 natural springs that support rural households. The soil lake fits with check dams and community water harvesting systems, and the state has set up a Climate Change Council to coordinate climate action.
