18. Groundwater Assessment 2024: Recharge, Extraction, Stress Zones

  • Total yearly groundwater recharge is 446.90 BCM; extraction is 245.64 BCM, a 60.47% stage of extraction.
  • Safe assessment units rose to 73.4% from 62.6% in 2017; over-exploited units fell from 17.24% to 11.13%.
  • Recharge through tanks, ponds and artificial structures reached 25.34 BCM, almost twice the 2017 level.
  • Stress remains concentrated in north-west India (Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan) and parts of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana.
