BRIC-RAB Meets: India’s Biotech Research Consolidation
Why in the news
BRIC’s Research Advisory Board (BRIC-RAB) held its first sitting at RCB, Faridabad. Setting up the RAB in 2026 completes the operational shift that began when BRIC was restructured in late 2023.

Other concepts
- Bioeconomy: economic activity from biotechnology research and innovation, across agriculture, healthcare, industrial biotechnology and bio-based products; BRIC’s mission-mode programmes aim to grow it nationally.
- Biomanufacturing hubs and biofoundries: common facilities for bulk bio-production and synthetic biology; pooling them avoids duplicate spending.
- Frugal innovation: affordable solutions built from local materials and homegrown data, reducing reliance on expensive imported technology.
Significance
- A structural consolidation of a fragmented biotech research landscape, described as a decentralised national laboratory: institutes keep their specialisation but follow one national agenda.
- Shared infrastructure replaces the earlier siloed approach where each institute ran its own facilities.
- Sovereign technology through frugal innovation and indigenous data fits the Atmanirbhar Bharat framework.
- Scientists’ performance matrices link career growth to national biotech goals.
- RAB’s launch in 2026 marks BRIC’s strategic maturity, nearly three years after restructuring began.
