JANANI Platform: Digital Maternal and Child Care Record
Why in the news
The Health Ministry rolled out JANANI in 2026, shifting maternal and child care from scattered paper records to a digital-first model that follows a woman and her baby over time.
About JANANI
- A smarter version of the older RCH portal, described as a digital health passport for women and infants.
- Tracks the continuum of care: first antenatal check-up, birth (natal), the baby’s first weeks (neonatal) and then family planning.
- Builds a permanent record, so data stays with a woman even after she moves to another state or city.
Key features
| Feature | What it does |
|---|---|
| High-Risk Pregnancy (HRP) alerts | Flags cases like severe anaemia or hypertension to health workers so vulnerable mothers get priority |
| QR-enabled digital MCH card | Replaces paper booklets; one scan at any health centre in India shows the full history |
| U-WIN link | Tracks the baby’s vaccinations |
| POSHAN link | Monitors nutritional support |
| ABHA link | Connected to the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission for a single health identity |
Background concepts
- Continuum of Care: seamless service delivery across two dimensions, time (pregnancy to childhood) and place (household or community up to hospital).
- MMR: maternal deaths per 1,00,000 live births.
- IMR: deaths of infants under one year per 1,000 live births.
Significance
The ultimate goal is to lower MMR and IMR, two key SDG indicators.
Exam angle
- Launched by: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 2026; replaces/upgrades the RCH portal.
- Linked systems: U-WIN, POSHAN, ABHA (Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission).
- Longitudinal record means health events are followed across a lifetime.
