TARA Glide Kit: RCI’s Bolt-On Precision Weapon
Why in the news
A first flight trial of TARA off the Odisha coast went well in May 2026, showing a low-cost route to smarter air-launched munitions.
Key facts
- Full form: Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation.
- Developer: Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad.
- Type: Modular Range Extension Kit, a bolt-on add-on.
- Function: fits onto unguided warheads (“dumb bombs”) and converts them into precision-guided glide weapons.
- Trial: maiden flight-trial off Odisha, May 2026.
About TARA
The idea is that a plain gravity bomb, like a thrown stone, gains wings and GPS-style guidance so it can glide to its target.
Advantages
- Cost: old bomb stockpiles can be upgraded cheaply instead of buying new precision missiles.
- Standoff range: wings let it fly to the target, so pilots release it from a safer distance outside short-range air defences.
- Lethality and safety: high precision needs fewer bombs and lowers the risk of civilian damage.
Exam angle
- Developer lab: RCI Hyderabad (DRDO).
- Category: bolt-on kit / glide weapon, for the Indian Air Force.
- Related terms: standoff range, precision-guided munition.
