Why in the news
The ICRIER-Prosus SIDE 2026 report placed India among the top five digital economies and fourth on its CHIPS AI Index. The jump rests on a huge user base, deep AI talent and a strong stack of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI).

The CHIPS framework
- Connect: internet access, broadband, mobile coverage, affordability, inclusion. India benefits from a big mobile base, cheap data, BharatNet and 5G.
- Harness: use of digital tools by business, government and households. Drivers: UPI, Aadhaar services, DigiLocker, ABDM and FASTag.
- Innovate: digital R&D, start-ups and patents. India has the 3rd-largest start-up ecosystem.
- Protect: data protection, cyber-security, consumer rights. Relevant: DPDP Act 2023, CERT-In and NCIIPC.
- Sustain: environmental and social sustainability, such as green data centres and e-waste rules.
India’s AI story
- Talent comes from IITs, IIITs, NITs, ISIs, AIIMS data-science programmes and many engineering colleges.
- IndiaAI Mission has five pillars: Compute, Foundation Models, Datasets, Applications and Skilling.
- Bharat Gen is a state-funded multilingual, multimodal Large Language Model.
- The National AI Portal (indiaai.gov.in) is the public hub; the RBI’s FREE-AI Committee studied ethical AI use in finance.
Why the rank improved from 8th to 5th
- The sample widened from 32 to 71 countries, so the ranks are not strictly comparable.
- Internet users grew about four times faster than in other top-10 nations.
- Smartphone-based generative AI use is surging.
- Digital India, IndiaAI Mission, ONDC and DPI exports lifted all five pillars; the JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, Mobile) built inclusion at scale.
