National CAMPA Clears Four Wildlife Projects Under ₹3,000 Crore Scheme
Why in the news
Four species-specific projects got a go-ahead, to be paid for from a fresh five-year scheme.
The four projects
- River dolphin: a recovery action plan.
- Project Snow Leopard Phase II: conservation plus the second population count.
- Indian rhinoceros: a long-term action plan with habitat protection.
- Wild water buffalo: a pan-India strategy.
Species notes
- River dolphin: National Aquatic Animal, Ganga-Brahmaputra system, Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
- Snow leopard: Himalayas; State animal of Ladakh.
- Indian rhinoceros (Greater One-Horned): largest numbers in Assam, at Kaziranga National Park.
- Wild water buffalo: mainly Assam and Chhattisgarh.

- Expands to National Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority.
- Sits under the Environment, Forest and Climate Change ministry.
- Handles compensatory afforestation money as per the CAF Act, 2016.
