Around World Population Day (11 July), UNFPA released a worldwide study titled “Lives, Choices and Futures” on how young adults think about partnership, children and the future.

About the survey

  • Respondents: 108,926 internet-connected adults aged 18-39 in 73 countries and territories.
  • Extends early findings seen in the 2025 State of World Population report.

  • India’s Total Fertility Rate is about 1.9-2.0, down from roughly 3.3 in the early 2000s and below the replacement level of 2.1.

UNFPA recommendations

  • Improve economic security and affordable housing.
  • Widen childcare access and offer gender-equitable parental leave.
  • Promote gender equality in unpaid care work.
  • Move to a rights-based demographic framework, favouring reproductive choice over rigid birth targets.
