Why in the news
A Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment restated the Government’s resolve to widen education access for disadvantaged students through PM-YASASVI.
About the scheme
- An umbrella scheme of the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, joining scholarships with hostel buildings.
- The hostel component began in 1998-99 for OBC youth, was revised in 2017-18 and later became PM-YASASVI.
- Aim: remove financial and geographical obstacles for rural and economically weaker students.
Eligibility and process
- Beneficiaries: OBC, EBC and DNT, outside the creamy layer; family income up to ₹2.50 lakh.
- Top-class components: YET, run by the National Testing Agency.
- Applications via the National Scholarship Portal; DBT to Aadhaar-seeded accounts.
