Marco Rubio India visit: US Secretary of State to tour Mumbai, Jamnagar
Why in the news
The US State Department said on 13 October 2026 that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Mumbai and Jamnagar from 17 to 22 October 2026. Energy cooperation and investment are central to the trip.
Key facts
- Purpose: deepen the India-US strategic partnership, discuss regional and global issues, and expand energy cooperation.
- Meetings: with senior Indian officials, and with business leaders to explore investment and closer economic links.
- Route: India is the second stop. Rubio first attends the C5+1 Ministerial in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, which brings the US together with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
- Repeat visit: his second India trip since May 2026, when he attended the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting hosted by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi.
- Jamnagar link: Reliance Industries runs the world’s largest single-site refining complex here, able to process 1.4 million barrels of crude per day.

About the energy angle
In March 2026, US President Donald Trump announced plans for the first new US oil refinery in 50 years, to be built in Brownsville, Texas, with investment from Reliance. He put its cost at $300 billion. A Jamnagar stop therefore highlights growing India-US energy links. US Ambassador Sergio Gor also pointed to defence ties, noting that F-35 jets were in Rajasthan for the first time during the Tarang Shakti exercises.
