Bullet train: 480 m Sabarmati river bridge completed in Ahmedabad
Why in the news
The Ministry of Railways announced on 3 October 2026 that the bridge over the Sabarmati river on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (bullet train) corridor has been completed.
Key facts
- Length: 480 metres, between the Sabarmati and Ahmedabad bullet train stations (about 1 km from Sabarmati and 4 km from Ahmedabad station).
- Height: around 36 metres, roughly that of a 12-storey building.
- Piers: 8 circular piers of 6 to 6.5 metres diameter; 4 stand in the riverbed, 2 on the banks and 2 beyond them.
- Spans: five of 76 metres and two of 50 metres, each made of 23 segments cast on site.
- Method: the balanced cantilever method, suited to long spans over rivers, lets the deck be built without scaffolding below.

About the project
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor runs through Gujarat and Maharashtra and is being built under the Ministry of Railways. River crossings are among its most demanding structures, and with this bridge 18 of the 21 river bridges in Gujarat are finished.
