Why in the news

The Ministry of Jal Shakti reported on 3 October 2026 that more than 1,850 gram panchayats conducted ‘Jal Arpan’ ceremonies at special gram sabhas held on Gandhi Jayanti, a key reform step under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.

Key facts

  • Handover: completed rural drinking water schemes were formally given to Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSCs), putting communities in charge.
  • Har Ghar Jal certificates: 346 issued through the Jal Arpan module, for the first time in regional languages, 19 in all, including Assamese, Bodo, Konkani, Sanskrit and Urdu.
  • Geo-tagging: about 2,691 water supply assets, including roughly 700 sources, were mapped under the Sujalam Bharat framework.
  • Coverage: more than 15.96 crore rural families, over 82% of rural households, have tap connections.
  • Village events included water pledges, water quality tests with Field Test Kits and active participation of women.

About Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0

Jal Jeevan Mission was launched in 2019 under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. On 10 March 2026 the Union Cabinet extended it up to December 2028 with a total outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore, including central assistance of ₹3.59 lakh crore. The goal is tap water for all 19.36 crore rural households. Its reforms include:
