PM-SETU completes one year: 850 ITIs identified for upgradation
Why in the news
PM-SETU (Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs) completed its first year on 4 October 2026. A PIB backgrounder dated 3 October 2026 reviewed its progress.
Key facts
- Launch: 4 October 2025.
- Hub-and-Spoke model: each Hub ITI is linked to about 4 Spoke ITIs.
- Target: 1,000 Government ITIs (200 Hub + 800 Spoke) plus capacity augmentation of 5 NSTIs at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kanpur and Ludhiana.
- Progress: 850 ITIs identified (172 Hub, 678 Spoke); 14 ITI clusters approved under Strategic Investment Plans worth ₹3,446 crore.
- SPV ownership: anchor industry partner 51%, Centre 24.5%, State 24.5%.
- New-age courses: 32 courses in areas such as AI, cyber security, electric vehicles, robotics, drones, green hydrogen and solar energy.
- Global tie-ups: Singapore (NSTI Chennai), France (NSTI Kanpur), Australia (NSTI Bhubaneswar), Germany (NSTI Hyderabad).

About PM-SETU
The scheme aims to turn Government ITIs into modern, industry-linked training centres. It is run by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, with a National Steering Committee chaired by the MSDE Secretary. The number of ITIs rose from 9,776 in 2014 to 13,888 in 2026, while enrolment grew from 9.51 lakh (2014-15) to 14.70 lakh (2025-26).
