Why in the news

The World Bank Group’s World Development Report (WDR) 2026, titled The Promise of Artificial Intelligence, was launched in India on 8 October 2026 at The Oberoi, New Delhi. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw delivered the keynote and formally presented the report.

Key facts

  • Organisers: the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), together with the World Bank Group.
  • Adopt, adapt, advance: the report’s framework asks countries to first adopt AI, tailor it to local needs, and only then advance it, instead of spending billions on frontier systems from scratch.
  • Core message: developing countries should be optimistic, strategic and pragmatic about AI.
  • Foundations needed: reliable electricity and connectivity, computing infrastructure, quality data, skills and capable institutions.
  • Preparedness gap: just one of the world’s 25 low-income countries has published a national AI strategy; those that stand to gain most may be least prepared.
  • Jobs: the risk of AI-driven job disruption is less imminent in developing countries.
