TERI Nano Sulphur for Mustard: Higher Yield and Oil
Why in the news
A TERI study found nano sulphur can raise output and oil in non-GM mustard.
Key facts
- Yield: 1,156 kg per acre up to about 1,559 kg; comparable to GM mustard DMH11 (10-40% gain).
- Crop: two Brassica juncea varieties; two foliar sprays.
- Better height, branching, chlorophyll and biological yield.
Nano versus traditional sulphur
| Feature | Nano | Traditional |
|---|---|---|
| Plant availability | 90-100% | 10-15% |
| Leaching and root bypass | Avoided | Occurs |
Context
- 41-45% of Indian soils are sulphur-deficient; Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh worst hit.
- The product uses biological agents, so it is called green.
- Helps small and marginal farmers.
