Russian diesel sanctions eased by US until April 7, 2027
Why in the news
On October 9, 2026, the US Department of the Treasury temporarily eased sanctions on Russian-origin diesel, allowing its sale and import until April 7, 2027. The step followed a call between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin.
Key facts
- Scope: The authorisation covers sale, delivery, offloading and import of Russian diesel, including into the United States, under the Russian Harmful Foreign Activities Sanctions Regulations.
- Validity: Up to 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on April 7, 2027.
- Price pressure: Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries led Moscow to curb diesel exports, while attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis on facilities in Saudi Arabia tightened supply further.
- Domestic politics: Trump faces pressure to cut fuel prices ahead of the November US midterm elections, and called lower costs for farmers and truckers his priority.
- Zelenskyy’s warning: He said easing sanctions without a lasting deal could let Russia drag out the war, and sought tougher sanctions instead.

|---|---|
| Immediately | Over 300,000 tonnes |
