About the RBI’s currency defence

The RBI is using several tools together: selling dollars in the spot and forward markets to smooth volatility, regulatory curbs that discourage speculative positions so the market mainly serves genuine hedging, liquidity measures, and steps to reduce import-related dollar demand. Economists contrast this targeted approach with the crisis-style response of 2013. A fall in reserves cannot be fully linked to intervention, since valuation changes also move the headline figure.

Exam angle

  • A rupee appreciation means fewer rupees are needed to buy one dollar.
  • DBS Bank noted that India’s current account position is stronger than in 2022-23.
  • Rising oil prices widen the import bill and add pressure on the rupee.
