A joint census carried out by the forest departments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu counted 2,668 Nilgiri tahrs across the Western Ghats.

About the Nilgiri tahr
The scientific name is Nilgiritragus hylocrius. It lives at about 1,200 to 2,600 metres on montane grasslands, shola forest edges, grassy slopes and rocky cliffs. It is active by day and is an important prey species for tigers and leopards. It also serves as an indicator of the health of montane grasslands. The species is Endangered on the IUCN Red List and enjoys Schedule-I protection under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. It is the state animal of Tamil Nadu.
