National Quantum Mission: 1,000 km quantum-secure link achieved
Why in the news
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced progress under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) at Pragatisheel Q-Foundry 2026 in New Delhi on 30 September 2026. The Ministry of Science and Technology issued the release.
Key facts
- 1,000 km of quantum-secure communication has been achieved in about three years; the mission aims for 2,000 km over eight years.
- Supported quantum start-ups increased from 17 to 26.
- Ten new quantum technologies were launched, and about 52 technologies are being developed at various Technology Readiness Levels.
- Four thematic hubs bring together 152 researchers from 43 institutions across 17 states and 2 Union Territories.

About the National Quantum Mission
The mission works in four domains: quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices. The Pragatisheel Q-Foundry initiative supports partnerships and the adoption of indigenous technology.
Exam angle
- Remember the progress against the target: 1,000 km of 2,000 km, about half the goal in under half the time.
- Learn the four NQM domains and the four hub institutions.
- Quantum communication uses quantum properties to secure data transmission.
