Melioidosis in India: Odisha Climate and Risk Study
Why in the news
Researchers in Odisha examined how weather and environment shape melioidosis and produced a state-wide risk map.
About melioidosis
- Cause: the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, entering by inoculation, inhalation or ingestion of contaminated soil or water.
- Range: mild skin infection to severe sepsis; up to 50% fatal in septicaemia.
- Diagnosis: hard, because of long incubation and likeness to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- Treatment: intravenous antibiotics, then a 12-20 week eradication phase.
Odisha study
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Institutions | AIIMS Bhubaneswar and IIT Bhubaneswar |
| Scope | 2015-2023; 144 cases; 3,024 days of weather data |
| Output | Risk map on 10 km grids |
| High-risk districts | Cuttack, Balasore, Khordha, Jajpur |
- Cases follow temperature, rainfall, cloud cover and solar radiation.
- Urbanisation, poor sanitation and changing rainfall may shift spread.
- Weather analytics should feed disease surveillance; the method can be replicated elsewhere.
Exam angle
- Organism: Burkholderia pseudomallei.
- South Asia’s share of global cases: 44%.
