India formally filed Meghalaya’s Living Root Bridges with UNESCO for assessment in the 2026-27 World Heritage cycle, under the name Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai Cultural Landscape.

About the bridges

  • Called Jingkieng Jri locally.
  • Footbridges made by training the aerial roots of live trees across gaps.
  • A form of living bio-engineering, where nature and human knowledge develop together.
  • Unlike ordinary bridges they strengthen with age and can survive several centuries.
