Why in the news

ISRO completed another short hot test of its semicryogenic engine, while launch preparations for the NASA-ISRO NISAR satellite also moved ahead.

About semi-cryogenic engines

  • Liquid rocket engine burning refined kerosene with liquid oxygen as oxidiser.
  • Fully cryogenic engines use liquid hydrogen with liquid oxygen.
  • Kerosene is lighter, easier to store and cheaper than liquid hydrogen, helping handling and cost.

Purpose and plans

  • Tests check design integrity of subsystems such as low- and high-pressure turbo pumps, pre-burner and control systems.
  • Results help fix the operating sequence of the full engine.
  • More qualification tests will follow before use in ISRO launch vehicles.

NISAR preparations

  • Launch vehicle: GSLV-F16; campaign has begun at Sriharikota.
  • On March 24, 2025, the GS2 liquid stage was flagged off from IPRC Mahendragiri to Sriharikota, with ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan present.

Exam angle

  • Propellants: LOX plus refined kerosene.
  • NISAR: NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar, on GSLV-F16.

Test yourself

1. Which propellant pair does a semi-cryogenic engine use?

It uses liquid oxygen as oxidiser and refined kerosene as fuel.

2. At what percentage of rated power did the semicryogenic engine run in ISRO's short hot test?

The engine ran at 60% of its rated power for 3.5 seconds.

3. Which launch vehicle is slated to carry the NISAR satellite?

GSLV-F16 will launch NISAR.
