Why in the news

The insurance regulator IRDAI issued a new Master Circular raising minimum rural, social-sector and motor third-party business for life, general and standalone health insurers.

Key facts

  • Rural FY26: insurers jointly cover lives, dwellings and vehicles in 25,000 Gram Panchayats; each ensures 15% coverage in its allotted ones.
  • Rural FY27: 50,000 panchayats; 25% coverage in earlier areas, 10% in new ones.
  • Social sector: 10% then 12% of insured lives; up to 20% of beneficiaries may rely on self-certification.
  • Checks: vehicle registration data and the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) database trace uninsured vehicles.
