Why Singapore and Malacca matter
- The Strait of Malacca lies between the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, linking the Indian Ocean to the Pacific through the South China Sea.
- It carries roughly a quarter of world goods trade and a huge share of energy flows, including around 80% of China’s oil imports.
- Singapore lies at the peninsula’s southern end and guards the strait’s entry from the South China Sea.
- For India, partnership with Singapore means freedom of navigation, maritime awareness and sturdier supply chains between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific.
