Why in the news

The Union Minister of State, Dr. Jitendra Singh, released the 2026 IAS e-Civil List. He said technology-enabled databases help governments find officers with the right expertise for varied development needs, and called the move from print to digital part of the Digital India vision.

Background

  • IAS: the premier civil service, recruited via the UPSC Civil Services Examination; traces to the Indian Civil Service (1858) and took its present name in 1946. Cadre controlling authority is DoPT; 25 cadres (24 state cadres plus joint cadres such as AGMUT and J&K).
  • DoPT is a department of the Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions ministry. Functions: cadre control of IAS, CSS and CSSS, Civil Services Examination coordination, personnel policy, training, vigilance and discipline, pay and allowances.
  • The Ministry has three departments: DoPT, DARPG and the Department of Pensions and Pensioners’ Welfare. The Prime Minister holds the ministry, with Dr. Jitendra Singh as MoS (Independent Charge).
