Why in the news

For the first time, State Mission for Clean Ganga (SMCG), West Bengal, is flying drones to trace pollution sources on a 120-km stretch of the Hooghly.

About the Hooghly (Hugli)

  • A major distributary of the Ganga system, supporting navigation, industry and cities like Kolkata.
  • Forms near Nabadwip where the Bhagirathi and Jalangi meet; the Bhagirathi is itself a Ganga distributary.
  • Flows south via Nadia, Hooghly, Howrah, Kolkata and South 24 Parganas into the Bay of Bengal through a wide estuary.
