Why in the news

Reports of repeated EPIC numbers across States triggered a political row on election integrity. The Election Commission (EC) pointed to ERONET as the remedy.

  • The EC promises one EPIC number per voter, issued only once.
  • It admitted that earlier manual systems caused some cross-State duplication, to be fixed gradually through ERONET.
  • The EC assured that duplicates will not affect anyone’s right to vote.

  • Full form: Electoral Roll Management System.
  • Handles Forms 6, 6A, 7, 8, 8A and 001.
  • Covers registration, migration and deletion of names, aiming at cleaner rolls and uniform data in all States and UTs.
