DoT and SEBI Sign MoU to Curb Financial Fraud
Why in the news
The telecom department and the securities regulator signed a data-sharing pact on 15 April 2026 to stop misuse of telecom resources in investment scams.
Key facts
- Parties: Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and SEBI; signed in New Delhi.
- Platform: the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP), which links over 1,400 stakeholders.
- Data: Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) and Mobile Number Revocation List (MNRL).
- Signatories: Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, Deputy Director General (AI & Digital Intelligence Unit), DoT; Sandip Pradhan, Whole Time Member, SEBI.
About the arrangement
The pact creates a two-way flow of intelligence. SEBI receives inputs on telecom resources tied to cyber fraud, impersonation and money-mule activity so that telecom authorities can act quickly. In turn, SEBI ensures that regulated entities link investor accounts only to active mobile numbers identified through the shared data.
Exam angle
- Memorise the two data tools: FRI and MNRL.
- Platform name: Digital Intelligence Platform, run by DoT.
- Regulator-ministry tie-ups on cyber-fraud are frequent in banking and RBI/NABARD papers.
- Do not confuse DoT (a department) with TRAI (the telecom regulator).
