Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme: Rs 10,000 Crore Plan
Why in the news
The government unveiled details of the Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme (CMAS), a Rs 10,000 crore plan from Union Budget 2026-27 to build up domestic production of shipping containers. Business Standard described it as a proposed scheme on 13 August.
Key facts
- Outlay: Rs 10,000 crore over five years.
- Target: about 7.5 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of annual domestic production.
- Capital assistance for greenfield facilities and expansion of brownfield units, plus operational assistance.
- Also covers testing infrastructure, skilling and capacity building.
- Expected jobs: about 3,000 direct and over 50,000 indirect.
Background
India currently imports nearly two million empty containers a year. In July 2026 the first India-made export-import container for Maersk was rolled out, and Maersk later ordered 1,000 more from DCM Shriram Group. The aim is to cut import dependence and make trade and logistics more resilient.
Exam angle
- TEU is the standard unit for container capacity.
- Note the ministry (Ports, Shipping and Waterways) and the outlay.
- Greenfield means a new facility; brownfield means expanding an existing one.
