Bima Sugam to launch in 30-45 days with motor insurance: IRDAI
Why in the news
IRDAI Chairman Ajay Seth said on 27 October 2026, at the Business Standard BFSI Insight Summit in Mumbai, that the Bima Sugam marketplace should launch within 30-45 days and that distribution reforms will move forward only with consensus.
Key facts
- Bima Sugam: online insurance marketplace; first phase will cover motor insurance.
- Distribution reforms: based on an IRDAI discussion paper; to be rolled out only after consensus with stakeholders.
- Commission: the paper proposes a higher commission for selling a new policy than for renewals, since fresh sales need more effort.
- Health portability: 60% of port-ins went to three entities, which also had 20% of port-outs; Seth asked whether commissions drive this switching.
- Deadline: feedback on the reforms extended to 31 October 2026 after a technical glitch; about 650 comments had been received.
- Growth: general insurance has grown about 1.3 times nominal GDP growth; life insurance roughly in line with it.
Other points raised
- Health insurance was described as the segment with the most customer dissatisfaction; IRDAI wants faster claim settlement.
- Seth questioned online platforms that ask for personal data before showing premiums, and the need for dynamic pricing.
- He suggested measuring the sector by people covered and protection per rupee of premium, not penetration alone.
- IRDAI hopes to bring in the new rules by January or April 2027.
